Hey everyone, We all have our opinions on the franchise Tomb Raider. From it’s beginnings in the 90’s to the reboot that came out just a couple years ago. Now with most games that come out, after a few years, unless they are extraordinary, they are forgotten. The Tomb Raider reboot is one of them that is extraordinary. They did a complete overhaul and that’s what is amazing. A game that spawned sequel after sequel to do a complete overhaul and to be good. But to call the game good is an insult.
The new look for the protagonist Lara is a lot better than the previous installments that counted more of sex appeal than anything else. They put her in the most revealing clothing that they could and in my opinion had created a horrible character and game series. To me, the older games were as if they put the weirdest ideas in a basket and had everyone pick one. I mean, dealing with dinosaurs and all that. Come on.
The reboot has a gritty, adventure, horror and survivalist feel to it. Yes there are monsters and such but I take it more to be a psychological sort of monster. The game puts you in such dangerous situations and forces you to think outside of the box. It is like Portal in that way I think. That some puzzles in the game will drive you crazy, but when you figure them out you feel like an idiot. Some solutions are just right in front of you but you don’t know that. Your protagonist Lara isn’t really a damsel in distress, I mean she starts out like that but transforms in front of you. It’s about growing up, facing all of your fears, standing up to insurmountable odds and getting out on top.
There is a controversial almost rape scene that a lot of people had problems with but I thought it was interesting adding it to the game. The scene wasn’t graphic or anything, it was an attempted rape and the fact that she fights back and ends up killing him is a great transformation from someone who couldn’t hurt a fly to defending herself. I think it’s a great message for women to fight back and don’t let themselves get taken advantage of. The game loves to beat the hell out of her and make her stand back up. I like that in a game. It’s what we all want to see.
“The one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fall, fail, die trying.”-Green Goblin, Spiderman 2002 (Told you all I’m a movie geek)
The reboot is one of the best games I’ve ever played and it doesn’t just disappear and gather dust. It is an instant classic and is loved by many. It is one of my favorite games for the story, the drama and how by the end you just want more. That’s why I’m excited for the sequel they are planning. Hope they get it out soon because I went from hating this franchise to loving it. I really love the game and recommend it to anyone that can get their hands on it. It is free right now on Xbox 360 for gold members. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed this review.
